Having Perspective During Difficult Times

by Elizabeth Morris

Today, I want to delve into the highs and lows of being a nail tech, a topic I'm passionate about and one that resonates with many in the industry. As an active member of numerous Facebook groups and a salon owner, I've witnessed and experienced the need to vent frustrations. It's common to see posts from fellow nail techs seeking an outlet to share their challenges, from difficult clients to negative reviews. This negativity can be draining and demotivating, making it crucial to find ways to stay positive and resilient in a field we love.

One major challenge many of us face is dealing with negative Yelp reviews. Yelp can be a double-edged sword, offering exposure but also opening us up to criticism. It's disheartening when a client, who seemed satisfied during their visit, later leaves a scathing review. These reviews can be personal and hurtful, attacking not just our work but also our character. It's important to remember that Yelp reviews are often one-sided, allowing clients to rate us with little context or opportunity for us to address their concerns.

Responding to Yelp reviews is key. It allows us to share our side of the story and potentially resolve issues with dissatisfied clients. However, it's crucial to respond professionally and avoid letting emotions dictate our response. Taking accountability, offering solutions, and demonstrating a commitment to customer satisfaction can help turn negative reviews into positive experiences.

Another challenge is dealing with difficult clients. Some clients can be demanding, often expecting perfection and quick fixes for any issues. It's important to set boundaries and manage expectations while also empathizing with their concerns. Addressing their complaints with patience and professionalism can help diffuse tense situations and build trust.

As a business owner, I also face challenges managing a team. While I love the creative aspect of my job, managing employees can be overwhelming. Employees look to me for guidance and support, and dealing with their personal issues on top of running a business can be challenging. It's important to maintain a balance between being a leader and a compassionate listener, ensuring that I address their concerns while also upholding the standards of our salon.

Slow business periods can also be disheartening. In the beauty industry, seasonal fluctuations and economic factors can lead to slow periods, impacting morale. During these times, it's important to stay proactive, focusing on marketing efforts and client retention strategies to boost business. And also diving into efficiencies. Are you over spending? Can you do more with less?

To navigate these challenges, it's important to approach them with a positive mindset and a proactive attitude. Taking accountability for our actions, proposing solutions, and learning from each experience can help us grow personally and professionally. By maintaining perspective and focusing on continuous improvement, we can overcome the challenges of being a nail tech and find success in our careers.
